Under its updated policies, YouTube will prohibit content creators from including URLs, embedded links, visual logos, or even verbal mentions of gambling websites that have not been certified by Google Ads or reviewed by YouTube.

Additionally, any content that falsely claims guaranteed profits from gambling will be removed.

We know this update may impact creators who focus on online gambling content like casino games and applications, but we believe these changes are a necessary step in protecting our community, especially younger viewers. YouTube is committed to supporting creators while ensuring a safe and responsible platform for everyone.

Policy Changes to Come in Effect in March 2025

Currently, the Google-owned video platform allows links to gambling websites that meet local legal requirements. However, this policy will change on March 19, 2025.

From that date, while content that adheres to YouTube’s guidelines can still be posted, any videos featuring online casino sites or apps may be age-restricted. This means that users who are not logged in or are under 18 will be unable to access such content. However, online sports betting and in-person gambling depictions will not be subject to these restrictions.

In the past, YouTube banned gambling ads from its masthead ad slot, which appears at the top of its website and app. Furthermore, last month, Google said that it is starting tests of a machine learning mode that estimates a user’s age in order to provide “age-appropriate experiences”.

Global Efforts to Regulate Gambling on Digital Platforms

Beyond YouTube’s policy changes, various governments have also increased efforts to regulate gambling content on digital platforms.

In India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued multiple warnings to social media platforms, advertising intermediaries, and influencers, urging them to avoid promoting gambling services.

Meanwhile, Italian regulators have penalized YouTube with large fines for failing to control gambling-related content, which led to a stricter approach toward gambling ads.

In France, the National Gaming Authority (ANJ) has cautioned influencers and content creators against endorsing illegal gambling websites. Similarly, Germany’s regulatory body, the GGL, has cracked down on gambling content, particularly on platforms like Twitch and YouTube.
