A recent World Series of Poker (WSOP) event attracted so few players that it had to be canceled. The WSOP #13 $5,300 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller event, part of the 2024 WSOP Online series, was set to take place on Tuesday, October 15, at 4pm, and was open to players in the United States.

Players from Nevada, New Jersey, and Michigan could take part in the event. However, despite their being a large number of players in these states, it didn't gather the required number of entrants. Only four players signed up, half of the minimum of eight needed to run the $5,300 bracelet tournament. As a result, WSOP had to cancel the event and refund the buy-in money to those who had registered.

Poker Pro’s React to Cancellation

The event’s cancellation was unexpected, especially given the prestige associated with WSOP bracelet events. Poker pro and WSOP bracelet winner Tony Dunst commented on X, saying that the cancellation was “pretty lol” and noted that WSOP could have held the event by either removing the minimum participant requirement or through the use of satellites.

Dunst also expressed concerns that the WSOP is “diluting” the value of its bracelets and said that some high-roller players are hesitant to participate in larger buy-in events online due to security concerns about the platform and the fact that it only communicates through automated tweets.

Players Call on WSOP to Improve Communication

Tim Link, another poker professional, reacted to the event’s cancellation by sharing a promotional message he received for the tournament after it had already been called off. He suggested that WSOP could prevent a similar occurrence by running more satellite competitions or improving its marketing efforts.

Players can win WSOP bracelets at both live and online events, and it has been suggested that while this may have helped to attract more players, it also makes the bracelets less valuable and attractive.
