Will the UK Gambling Act Review Influence Australian Regulation?
After a huge number of delays, last month saw the publication of the UK’s Gambling Act review. The White Paper put forward several suggestions for changes to the UK’s gambling legislation, and researchers are now looking at how it could influence regulations in Australia.
Professor Sally Gainsbury, from the University of Sydney and the director of the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic, has said that it is clear that the UK market is headed for significant changes. She postulated that these changes would have an impact on the Australian market, but she refrained from providing details.
There are a lot of people around the world watching what happens in the UK. Australian gambling regulation is currently being reviewed, and the changes in the UK are likely to impact future Australian gambling reforms.
In a recent webinar, Professor Gainsbury, together with Assistant Professor Kahlil Philander from Washington, discussed the subject with Tim Miller, UKGC’s executive director for research and policy, as well as the body’s director Ben Haden. Haden said that they are currently working on a new methodology for the “Gambling Survey for Great Britain” that is designed to produce data to help better understand player behavior and gambling harm.
