LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:In attendance were key figures like Lance Morgan, CEO of Warhorse Gaming, Garald Wollsen, a president of the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, and Denny Lee, the chairman of the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission.
At the opening, Wollsen and tribe member Aaron LaPointe placed the first wagers. They decided to play the Mighty Cash Ultra 88 slot.
How Warhorse Casino Helps the Community
Nebraska has been facing a property tax crisis to the point that the state is exploring expanding into online sports betting. This is the second Warhorse casino and fourth retail sportsbook overall. The facility has 58,000 square feet of gaming space and features 800 slots, 19 table games, 100 simulcast screens, and a sportsbook.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, it’s estimated that the city of Omaha and the country it resides in will earn about $6 million in tax revenue yearly. The state has a 20% tax on gross gaming revenues. Within that 20%, funds go to the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund (70%), the county where the casino is (25%), the state’s general fund, and the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance fund (5%).

Omaha Casino Opponents Speak Out
Gambling with the Good Life, an anti-gambling group, has been staunchly against gambling of any kind expanding in the state since it formed in 1995. They disagree that it’ll bring property tax relief.
Additionally, Candace Gregory, the CEO of Open Door Mission, an organization that assists those experiencing homelessness and hunger, said that the new casino will harm the community. The next phase of construction starts in spring 2025 and will add about 400 gaming positions, dining, and a smoking spot.
It remains to be seen how this casino will impact the community and if the state makes and headway on legalizing online sports betting.
