Vegas Strip Casino Workers Could Go On Strike Today
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:As negotiations for new employment contracts with casinos and hospitality workers on the Las Vegas Strip hit a roadblock, members of the Culinary Union in Sin City are weighing the option of an informational picket to voice their dissatisfaction. Employees from various properties, including the Rio Las Vegas, Sahara Las Vegas and Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, are contemplating walking off their jobs as they seek improved contract terms.
Vegas Strip Strike May Be Imminent
The planned strike for the Strip properties is slated for today, during which unionized workers from the aforementioned establishments will walk off their jobs. The union has also disclosed plans for a 36-hour continuous picketing of all unresolved casinos as part of their protest strategy.

Wherever active picket lines exist outside unsettled casinos, the union has urged its allies and Vegas visitors to refrain from crossing the picket line both today and tomorrow.
In another strategic move, the Culinary Union pushed back a potential strike for 10 Downtown Vegas properties that still don't have agreements in place. These include Binion's, Circa, Downtown Grand, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate and others. Although negotiations are underway, if an agreement isn't reached before the end of the weekend, the strike could be held on Monday.
Some Progress Already Made
As negotiations continue, the Culinary Union is advocating for a five-year agreement for 2,600 employees in hospitality positions across Las Vegas who currently don't have a new contract. Definitive agreements are still not in place as discussions progress.
Despite the challenges, the Culinary Union has secured victories through successful negotiations with major players such as MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts. Agreements have also been reached with independent establishments on the Strip, including Circus Circus, Four Seasons, Treasure Island, Tropicana and others, as well as the Plaza casino in downtown Vegas.
These potential strikes could have ripple effects on Super Bowl LVIII, which would give the Culinary Union additional leverage to not give in. The upcoming Big Game, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, is scheduled to be played at Allegiant Stadium on February 11. The ongoing contract disputes underscore the challenges faced by both workers and casino operators in finding common ground in a dynamic and crucial industry.
