UKGC Reports Impact of Online Slot Changes from 2021
The Gambling Commission, the regulator of gaming in the United Kingdom (UKGC), has released a report that assesses the impact of changes introduced to online gambling nearly 2 years ago.
The changes to how gaming operators can offer online slot games were introduced in October 2021, with the aim of strengthening the protection of players using online slot games.
The key changes in gameplay for online slots were to slow down the spin speed and general gameplay speed, remove auto-play features, and stop celebratory images and sounds if a player is losing. These amendments were introduced following a lengthy consultation period with all the stakeholders in the gaming industry.
Another change was to clearly display the amount of time gamblers spend playing online slots during a gameplay session. The report stated that the UK Gambling Commission has carried out an extensive survey of players and found that the changes had led to a reduction in play intensity. There has also been a decrease in the number of players spending more than an hour playing online slots.
The various changes to slow down gameplay had not led to players increasing their stakes, and when surveyed, it was found that players felt the changes had not had a significant impact on their gambling enjoyment.
Overall the Gambling Commission noted that it felt the changes had not had any unintended consequences, while play on online slots games had increased since the introduction of the changes.
Our assessment of the changes to online slot games has shown indications of reduced play intensity with no significant negative impacts on play or behaviors. That’s positive, but we aren’t complacent and will continue to monitor this specific part of the sector for both any unintended circumstances or non-compliance.
