UKGC Charges 15 Individuals over Election Betting Probe
The United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC), the regions regulator, has announced it has charged 15 people with betting offences relating to wagering on the date of the last general election in the UK. This comes after a probe by the UKGC following a string of bets made by individuals who worked for the Prime Minister at the time, Rishi Sunak, or in close proximity to the last government.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Under the details of the Gambling Act 2005 in section 42, it is a criminal offense to gain an unfair advantage in betting markets, and it is alleged that some individuals present at a meeting outlining the date of the 2024 General Election then proceeded to place bets on this date with advanced knowledge of the outcome.
The Conservative government were in power at the time and Rishi Sunak called a snap election which took many by surprise. Gaming operators in the Westminster area raised the alarm when several customers directly associated with the conservative government placed bets on the date of a general election. One of the individuals charged was Craig Williams a former Member of Parliament and close aide of the Prime Minister.

UKGC Promises Robust Enforcement
The UKGC said it was right to pursue those who had breached gambling laws in the UK because it wanted robust regulation throughout the gambling industry in the UK.
Although it stated the amount of money placed on bets on the date of the 2024 Election were relatively small the procedures should apply the same way. It reiterated that members of the public who enjoy a wager must be able to have confidence on the events that they bet on are free from corruption.
The Gambling Commission has charged 15 people with offences under the Gambling Act 2005 following an investigation into alleged cheating related to bets placed on the timing of the 2024 General Election. The investigation, initiated in June 2024, focused on individuals suspected of using confidential information - specifically advance knowledge of the proposed election date - to gain an unfair advantage in betting markets.
The charges brought are the culmination of months of investigation by UK gaming regulators and law enforcement who chose to pursue an investigation to see if criminal charges should be brought.
