The MP states he believes there is public support for a ban on television gambling adverts and because Channel 4 has a remit as a public services broadcaster he feels the media platform should lead the way in the industry and stop airing gambling advertisements. It is estimated that television and media platforms enjoy a combined revenue of up to £2 billion each year from broadcasting gambling advertisements.

Sobel has raised concerns over the amount of gambling advertising on media platforms because he says he represents an area, Leeds Central, with a high level of problem gambling. Additionally, Channel 4 is based in Sobel’s constituency.

The majority of the UK public support a full ban on gambling advertising. I am asking that you consider a full ban on gambling advertising on Channel 4. As a broadcaster known to challenge the status quo, […] Channel 4 has been a pioneering, radical voice for the country for over 40 years. I am eager to work together to continue this positive legacy, and help mitigate the worst effects of gambling harm.

Research on the Impact of Gambling Ads on Vulnerable Groups

This appeal comes during a period of transition in the UK gambling industry and the government is evaluating proposals to changes to the Gambling Act in the region to reflect the rise in online gaming.

Sobel pointed to government research in 2022 that indicated gambling advertisements were often targeting vulnerable groups. The ads had a significant impact on children and the report outlined this group then went on to place a wager within the next year. The report also showed gambling ads were being used to target those who were flagged as at the greatest risk of gambling-related harm.

Gambling advertising has increased substantially in recent years. […] Removing gambling advertising from broadcast and on-demand television would provide another layer of protection for those vulnerable to gambling-related harms, and help stem the increase in gambling activity among new target demographics targeted by the gambling industry.
