Signaling the final curtain call for the Tropicana, Bally’s Corporation has announced that the casino resort will be imploded on October 9 at 2:30 a.m. However, the property won’t go down without a bang, as the operator has planned a dazzling event to precede its dramatic demolition.

According to Bally’s, the implosion will be preceded by fireworks and a drone show, which will also take place on Wednesday, October 9. Fireworks by Grucci has been contracted to execute the pyrotechnic display for Tropicana’s farewell celebration.

The legendary hotel first revealed its plans for a Fall demolition in March and closed its doors for the final time on April 2. Shortly after, the county was granted a commercial demolition permit, which was then followed by the removal of asbestos from the site.

The Next Chapter

Following the demolition, the property will be redeveloped into a new casino resort and a 33,000-seat ballpark for the MLB’s Oakland Athletics. The team, which is currently playing its final season at the Oakland Coliseum, will temporarily relocate to Sacramento until 2027 before making its permanent move to Las Vegas in 2028.

While implosions are not unusual in Las Vegas, the Tropicana’s will be the first since 2007, when the New Frontier and Stardust were reduced to rubble.

The Stardust’s implosion, along with the earlier demolitions of the Sands in 1996 and Desert Inn in 2001, was among the most transformative, leaving lasting physical and sentimental impacts on the city’s landscape.

Hotel Closures to Drive Mid-Tier Growth

In the same month, John DeCree, the director of equity research at Global Commercial Real Estate Services (CBRE), published a study predicting that the closure of The Mirage and Tropicana hotels on the Las Vegas Strip will increase demand for mid-tier hotels in the area and improve earnings.
