The challenging Sands New York casino project is part of a grand vision to transform a sprawling 72-acre site into the Mitchel Field Integrated Resort District, nestled around the iconic Nassau Coliseum.
Bold Plans for Sands New York
According to the unveiled plans, the proposed square footage for the Sands New York casino stands at an impressive 396,726. This figure places the future venues among one of the bigger land based casinos just behind the expansive WinStar World Casino & Resort in Oklahoma and the renowned Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, cementing its status as a potential gaming giant. The details have been meticulously outlined in a comprehensive zoning application submitted to the Town of Hempstead.
With aspirations reaching sky-high, Las Vegas Sands intends to develop over 3.7 million square feet for the resort's above-ground facilities. In addition to this substantial space, the plans also incorporate another 3.9 million square feet designated for parking and garages, along with an expansive 765,000 square feet of underground area.
The Nassau development blueprint boasts an array of features designed to create a multifaceted experience. This ambitious proposal encompasses two hotels offering a combined 1,670 rooms, 31,200 square feet of retail space, 60,000 square feet of public attractions, and a staggering 213,000 square feet of meeting facilities. Additionally, the plans include an enticing 147,929 square feet reserved for restaurants and bars, as well as a state-of-the-art 4,500-seat live performance venue, adding cultural vibrancy to the envisioned resort.
Public Concerns and Support Clash
Town of Hempstead spokesperson Greg Blower emphasized the thorough and transparent review process that the application will undergo. This process will involve public hearings to ensure that all stakeholders can express their views and concerns regarding the ambitious undertaking.
However, not everyone is welcoming this colossal project with open arms. Rich Catalano, a representative of the group 'Say No to the Casino,' voiced concerns about the scale of the proposed casino.
Catalano shed light on the revelation that the casino's planned size of 393,726 square feet – equivalent to seven football fields – starkly contrasts with earlier implications of a smaller gaming floor footprint. The group remains steadfast in their opposition, highlighting concerns about the potential impact on the local community and its values.
As discussions and evaluations unfold, the fate of the Sands New York casino remains uncertain. While proponents hail the potential for economic growth and job creation, opponents fear the possible disruption to the community's way of life.
