Thailand Police Crack Down on Illegal Gambling During Euro 2024

Thailand’s anti-gambling task force, known as the Centre for the Prevention and Suppression of Illegal Euro 2024 Football Betting, has arrested 3,863 people in a special operation aimed at tackling illegal betting during the UEFA Euro 2024 championship.

Operation Time to Coincide with Euro 2024

Assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Akradet Pimolsri mentioned in a statement to Thailand news agencies that the task force began the operation on June 14, 2024, to coincide with the start of Euro 2024.

This coordinated effort aimed to crack down on illegal betting activities surrounding the major football event. Out of the total arrests, 3,017 suspects were detained at illegal gambling dens. This group included 50 alleged bookmakers who are believed to have organized and facilitated the illegal activities, as well as 2,944 individuals accused of participating in gambling. The operation reflects a significant step towards curbing illegal gambling in the country.

Additionally, 224 local illegal gambling websites were shut down, leading to the arrest of 846 suspects. Among these, 145 were suspected operators of these websites, while 701 were identified as clients or visitors. Authorities reported that these websites had a combined gambling circulation amounting to TBH 2.4 billion.

More Than 1,000 Arrests in One Week

The latest figures come after last week's update from the Centre for the Prevention and Suppression of Illegal Euro 2024 Football Betting. Last week, authorities reported a total of 2,600 arrests, encompassing both online and offline illegal betting activities. These activities involved a staggering sum of TBH 1.8 billion and led to the closure of 142 illegal websites.

Although the operation has officially concluded, business operators and establishments are being warned to comply with existing regulations. Failure to do so will result in severe legal consequences, ensuring that the crackdown on illegal betting remains effective and deterrent.
