The Wall Street Journal has reported that Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is currently under federal scrutiny. The investigation is trying to determine whether Rozier manipulated his performance while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. Authorities began looking into a March 23, 2023, game between the Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans due to suspicious betting activity.

Inquiry Linked to Jontay Porter Investigation

The inquiry is said to be linked to the same investigation that resulted in former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter receiving a lifetime ban and facing criminal charges. Five other individuals allegedly involved in Porter’s betting scheme have also been charged, with the latest arrest occurring earlier this month.

During the Hornets-Pelicans game in question, Rozier played just over nine minutes in stark contrast to his usual 35-minute average and 21 points per game. He exited early with a foot injury and did not return, later missing the next eight games. Integrity monitors flagged a high number of bets placed on Rozier’s “under” performance, which caused some sportsbooks to halt wagers on him.

NBA Promises to Cooperate with Investigation

With the legalization of sports betting across multiple states, millions of Americans can now place bets on various aspects of games. While traditional bets focus on a team’s overall performance, prop bets, wagers on specific in-game statistics, have become extremely popular. These can include bets on a player’s fouls, scoring totals, or even underperformance.

NBA spokesperson Mike Bass confirmed that the league was alerted to unusual betting activity regarding Rozier’s March 2023 performance. He said that the league carried out its own investigation and did not find any wrongdoing. However, he acknowledged the ongoing probe by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and reaffirmed the NBA’s commitment to cooperating with authorities.

At this time, Rozier has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
