A recent study carried out on behalf of the online casino Lottoland.co.uk found that a significant number of British adults have tried gambling at one point or another, but close to half of them have never played popular games such as poker or blackjack.

Lack of Knowledge about Popular Games

The study, which surveyed 2,000 adults, found that 29% of people were intimidated by the idea of entering a land-based casino. This was mainly due to a lack of knowledge about how the games work and it was cited by 37% of respondents as the reason they have not tried their luck.

Other reasons given for not entering a UK online casino were worries over being judged for not knowing the rules of the game (19%) and worries about “doing the wrong thing”. Furthermore, 29% of respondents said that they preferred live online casinos and 18% said they preferred land-based casinos.

It was found that 23% of respondents didn’t understand the basics of a slot machine, and the same proportion didn’t know how to bet on horseracing. Furthermore, 30% did not understand roulette and 37% did not know how to bet on boxing matches.

The respondents did have a good knowledge of non-gambling card games, with 62% comfortable playing snap and 61% happy to play Solitaire. However, a third said that they were scared of the idea of learning a new card game.

General Preference for Skills Gaming

The study also found that 32% of respondents preferred games that involved some skill or strategy. Furthermore, while there was a preference for online casinos, 45% of people said that they would like to visit world-famous casinos, such as Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

However, while many expressed fears surrounding gambling, 34% believed that they would be good poker players due to their ability to remain calm, with 19% believing that they would be good bluffers. However, 28% said that they struggle to read people, which would put them at a disadvantage.
