Study to Explore Psilocybin’s Role in Treating Gambling Addiction
The Heroic Hearts Project has announced an innovative program that is offering military veterans battling gambling addiction an opportunity to try psilocybin therapy, the active compound in magic mushrooms.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The research, conducted with the University of Gibraltar, will take place at a dedicated retreat in the Netherlands, and it will focus on understanding whether psilocybin can effectively reduce gambling addiction. Veterans are thought to be particularly vulnerable to addiction due to the psychological strain many experience after leaving military service, and conventional treatments often fail to provide sufficient relief.
Psychedelics have shown promise in addressing other types of addiction when combined with psychological support. However, this study is the first attempt to explore psilocybin’s potential in treating gambling addiction. Participants will engage in a nine-week program with the retreat at its center.
A Supportive Environment for Psilocybin Therapy
The retreat offers two psilocybin ceremonies in a serene, natural setting under the supervision of trained therapists. During these sessions, participants may receive up to five grams of psilocybin truffles, ensuring a controlled and safe experience. Preparation is a key aspect of the program, with two weeks of mental and emotional readiness preceding the retreat.
Keith Abraham, CEO of Heroic Hearts UK, spoke about the importance of a rigorous scientific approach, even as he expressed optimism about the therapy’s potential. He explained that he believes the treatments will be effective and that the study is hoping to find scientific proof.
The program extends beyond the retreat itself, offering ongoing support and follow-up evaluations to monitor participants’ progress.

It is hoped that if successful, this research will contribute to the growing acceptance of psychedelics as a viable option for addressing complex mental health conditions resistant to traditional therapies.
