Sportsbet Fined Second Time in 2021 for Illegal Gambling Ads
The Liquor and Gaming New South Wales regulator, the gambling regulator for the most populous Australian city, has reportedly fined the online Australian sports betting domain, SportsBet.com.au $135,000 for having violated the advertising rules of the state.
The sports betting domain was penalized after the Liquor and Gaming NSW latest probe, which found that SportsBet.com.au had contravened its rules by electronically sending promotional materials to punters who had earlier opted out of receiving such inducements.
The regulator also added that the infringements had occurred over six months and were more compounded because the respondents or punters could not block the offers due to the confusing layout, functionality, and navigation of the site's features, including the unsubscribe option.
The latest indictment makes it the second time in a year that SportsBet.com.au has been penalized by the New South Wales gaming regulator after it received a $16,200 fine for similar offenses in March.
However, the sports betting service's punishment is more severe this time because the state also found out the former's social media pages contained banned gambling advertisements relating to the Treasure Punt complimentary bet promotion from November last year.
A release from the Canberra Weekly news magazine revealed that SportsBet.com.au is owned by British iGaming giant Flutter Entertainment who is yet to release an official statement on its site's sentence.
Participation in most forms of gambling in NSW is declining, but online betting is increasing with 70 percent of all sports betting, and 37 percent of race betting now carried out online. Liquor & Gaming NSW consistently expresses concerns to industry about gambling advertising and will continue to monitor compliance with these laws and take strong action for serious and blatant offending.
