Sports technology company Panda Interactive has announced that it had filed two complaints of patent infringement against Sportradar Group AG and Genius Sports Limited.

The complaints, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District, alleged that Sportradar and Genius, direct competitors of Panda, used the company’s video streaming technology patents without proper authorization.

Panda Alleges Patent Infringement by Major Sports Tech Suppliers

Panda has launched several patents in the live data and content streaming verticals, including multiple video streaming products like the company’s B2B Watch & Bet platform utilized by big sports media firms, leagues, and sportsbooks.

However, according to the company, its competitors have extensively copied its patents in the streaming market as well as the online sports betting market.

We have made substantial investments in the development of our technology and cannot tolerate having our patented technology used unfairly by others and against us. No one wants to see their own arsenal used against them in battle.

Through the suits, Panda claimed that the sports technology suppliers use its patents in several aspects of their operations. These include Sportradar’s video streaming products like Sportradar emBet, Sportradar OTT, and Sportradar Live Channel Trading brands.

Genius also faces allegations of patent infringement in its live streaming and betting products like Genius’ LiveData, LiveTrading, Genius Trading, BetVision, and in-Play Multibet.

Panda alleges that through the “illegal and unauthorized” use of its patents, Sportradar and Genius have experienced substantial gains in profit, revenue, market share, and capital. However, the company claims that these infringements have been damaging to its business in the long run. It stated that it had incurred losses in sales and profits and lost market share and goodwill.

The confluence of media and sports betting is essential to the future of the fan-viewing experience. Panda developed its pioneering technology long before online sports betting was even legal in the US. Sportradar and Genius Sports are infringing on our patents and capitalizing on our groundbreaking work.

Genius and Sportradar Legal Dispute

Interestingly, Genius and Sportradar were embroiled in their own legal conflict a year ago. The defendants’ point of contention revolved around whether the deal between Genius and Football DataCo (FDC) that gave the supplier exclusive rights to collect, license, and distribute live data from the Premier League, the Football League, and the Scottish Professional Football League, was anti-competitive.

Following years of legal proceedings, both parties reached a settlement in October 2022. Sportradar was awarded a sub-license that provided access to a delayed secondary feed until 2024.

In exchange, the company agreed to stop its unauthorized in-stadium scouting of England and Scotland professional football league matches.
