Spelinspektionen Given Extra Powers for Gambling Act in July
The Riksdag, the Swedish government’s legislative body, has given the Spelinspektionen more power which has been added to the Gambling Act due to come into effect on July 1st with amendments to curb unlicensed operators.
The Swedish Gambling Authority has explained the main purpose of the new gambling rules in July is to bring all aspects of the gaming industry into a regulated arena and help tackle illegal gambling.
The proposed amendments to the Gambling Act include powers for the Swedish regulators to block electronic payments that it believes are being made in connection with unlicensed gaming operations.
Another power is the ability to obtain personal data from operators on customers who have been identified as fixing sports events. The operators will also be required to make this personal data available to the police.
The Swedish Gambling Authority will also be allowed to anonymously buy services from gaming operators to oversee their operations are being run legally.
Many operators who currently operate in the Swedish jurisdiction have applied and been granted the new license so they can carry on operating after the start date of the new Gambling Act changes in July.
