Southeast Asia Countries Target Cross-Border Crime Prevention

China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand have announced they intend to intensify their fight against a range of cross-border crimes, including illegal gambling, with the creation of a proposed Global Security Initiative.

Foreign Ministers of the four countries attended the meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and held talks on criminal activities during the informal discussions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that he believed that security in the countries is paramount and the Southeast Asia region is undergoing vast changes. This represents a challenge to the countries in the region and China has stated that it believes the countries a the meeting must work together and use their combined resources to combat organized crimes in the region.

During the meeting, Wang Yi spoke of the proposed integration of crime prevention services between all parties present at the discussion. As well as strengthening the legal and judicial cooperation between the four countries, they intend to participate in joint training exercises.

Following these successful talks, the ministers from China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand outlined a future meeting in the Lancang-Mekong region that will focus specifically on law enforcement and security cooperation.

Proposed Exchange of Intelligence and Information

Wang Yi stressed that the strength of the cooperation would come from the ability of the four countries in the region to effectively exchange information and intelligence the respective countries have gathered.

The countries have also expressed their wish to continue the cooperation to repatriate criminals from organized gangs to their country of origin and to speed up this process where possible.

China boasts it has been part of this successful scheme that has so far seen more than 50,000 alleged criminals returned to their own country to stand trial for a variety of gambling and fraud offences.
