Between September 29 and October 6, Macau welcomed an average of 138,000 visitors per day, which was in keeping with the projections of the Macau Government Tourism Office. The number of arrivals peaked at over 174,000 on October 4, marking a new daily record for the holiday period and highlighting the city’s strong post-pandemic recovery.

In total, there were 2.21 million inbound and outbound trips during this time, with the majority passing through the Border Gate, Hengqin Port, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. While visitation from Hong Kong saw a drop, this was counterbalanced by an influx of visitors from other regions, and of course, the rise in tourism provided a noticeable boost to the local economy.

A Key Period for Macau’s Tourism Industry

Golden Week, celebrated as the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, is a key period for tourism, often serving as an indicator of Macau’s overall economic health. This year, the hotel sector reported a 95% occupancy rate, with average room rates matching those seen in 2019. This shows a solid recovery for the region, with businesses returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also benefited from the tourism increase and Andy Wu, the chairman of the Federal General Commercial Association of Macau SMEs, pointed out that local businesses should now focus on better catering to younger customers in order to sustain growth.
