Potential Strike by Las Vegas Hospitality Workers Amidst F1 Excitement
In a striking development that could affect the vibrant activity in Las Vegas, particularly during the city's first Formula 1 event, two prominent labor unions have announced a potential strike. The Culinary Workers Union Local 226, alongside the Bartenders Union Local 165 have announced a deadline for strike action to be Friday, November 10, 2023, at 5 a.m. PT.
Las Vegas Casinos Face Potential Strike by Hospitality Workers
A total of 35,000 hotel employees are poised to strike should they fail to reach acceptable agreements with leading casino operators such as MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts by the specified date.
Should the strike proceed, it will represent the most significant action of its kind in the hospitality industry in the United States. The unions, which speak for 60,000 workers across Las Vegas and Reno, have been in discussions for over seven months, striving to achieve improved wages, lighter workloads, enhanced safety protocols, and other benefits for their members.
Ted Pappageorge, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union, has expressed that one month earlier, members had decisively voted in favor of a strike action. He acknowledged the ongoing negotiations as being conducted with sincerity. However, he expressed disappointment over the lack of substantial progress from the employers' side.
Their current proposal on the table is historic, but it is not enough, and workers deserve to have record contracts – especially after these giant corporations are enjoying their record profits.
Unions Actively Preparing for Strikes
The Culinary Union, which has avoided striking for many years, is now actively preparing for a significant walkout. The organization is gathering resources necessary to support 45 different strike stations.
These preparations include setting up multiple picket lines around brick-and-mortar casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. Union workers are receiving information on how to receive strike benefits, and plans are in place to ensure a continuous strike line at each casino, equipped with electronic devices for check-ins, signs, mobile restrooms, furniture, loudspeakers, and other vital supplies.
Last week, Las Vegas employees, represented by the Culinary Workers Union, carried out a peaceful protest to bring attention to the ongoing contract discussions with the major casinos. The protest resulted in the arrest of approximately 58 participants, focusing on demands for higher wages and better working conditions for 40,000 members whose contracts have recently concluded.
The impending strike threatens to affect 18 casinos on the Strip, including renowned venues such as Aria, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, and Mandalay Bay. This labor dispute gains additional prominence as it may overlap with the much-anticipated Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Las Vegas, beginning on November 15. The event is expected to attract thousands to the Strip, prompting worries about possible service interruptions.
