Police Raids in Chiang Mai Lead to Shutdown of Illegal Gambling Sites
Police in Thailand have announced that as part of a crackdown on illegal gambling in the country, they have raided premises in Chiang Mai, resulting in several arrests and shutting down illegal online sites.
Officers in Provincial Police Region 5 received a tip about alleged illegal gambling in Chiang Mai and obtained a warrant to raid a premises in the Saraphi district. Following the raid, police made multiple arrests and seized cash and goods, including laptops used to run the illegal gambling operation.
Thailand has strict gambling laws that date back to the Gambling Act of 1935 and prohibits most forms of gambling, except horse racing and some lotteries. Police in the country face an uphill struggle to keep up with the growing number of illegal online gambling sites available in the region.

Those Arrested Admitted to Running Multiple Sites
Police revealed that five people were arrested as part of the raids in Chiang Mai, and the suspects had admitted they were administrators of multiple betting websites.
The list of sites involved in the illegal operation were the Bioclub, Prettygaming168, and GK168 online gambling websites. It is estimated that the combined sites had more than 1.3 million dollars in circulation in the region, and those arrested said the sites were generating up to 50 million baht amount a month.
As part of the ongoing investigation into illegal gambling operations in the country, police also raided premises in Phuket; it is important to mention that last year as well, some arrests were made in Phuket. During the operation, police made thirty-two arrests and it is believed that one of the suspects taken into custody may work in the police force.
As well as the multiple arrests made in the raid, police also seized a range of gambling equipment and a significant amount of cash.
