The UK Gambling Commission notified the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards about the betting activity and they subsequently began an investigation. This led to the constable, who is part of the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command, being taken off operational duties and then arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Investigations Ongoing

The investigation is not yet over and the officer has been released on bail pending further inquiries. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is also looking into the case. With the election just weeks away it is no surprise that the case has been seized upon by the other parties seeking election.

Rishi Sunak must call a Cabinet Office inquiry into what is shaping up to be yet another scandal at the heart of Government. This stinks of yet more sleaze and answers are needed. An inquiry is needed to understand who knew what and when.

Second Instance of Irregular Election Betting

The arrest earlier this week comes after last week’s controversy involving Craig Williams, a Conservative candidate and one of Sunak’s former parliamentary aides. He admitted placing a £100 bet on the election being held in July just three days before the official announcement.

Williams apologized and described his actions as a “huge error of judgment” and promised to work with the UKGC. However, he has not said whether he had insider information prior to placing the bet.
