Police Make 66 Arrests in Betting Raids at the Bangalore Turf Club
The Bengaluru Police released a statement with details of 66 bookies that were arrested during a raid on illegal bookmaker operations at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) premises.
The raid at the prominent horse racing club occurred following complaints from visitors at the BTC and led to the Central Crime Branch (CCB) carrying out an investigation into the illegal gambling activities at the venue.
Police reported there were a total of 75 bookies at the premises, but they only arrested 66 offenders, with the remaining 9 fleeing the venue. During the raid at the BTC, as well as the arrests, the CCB seized cash valued at Rs 3.47 crore, documents, and 55 mobile phones that were being used as part of the illegal gambling operations.
In all, 75 bookies were involved in illegal horse race betting. While 66 were arrested, nine are absconding. 55 mobile phones were recovered and will be sent to FSL for examination.
Bookies Charged with Tax Evasion
In the statement, the CCB said the charges for the bookies included unlicensed bookmaking, failure to provide invoices, and tax evasion. Following the arrests, the bookies were taken to High Grounds police station, charged with illegal bookmaking activities, and then bailed.
The operation targeted individuals who, without any official license, were illegally collecting money from the public/punters under the guise of being legal bookies for the Turf Club. These individuals were conducting unauthorized horse race betting activities parallel to the Bangalore Turf Club without displaying government orders at their stalls, maintaining proper accounts, or managing appropriate records for the money collected from customers.
The CCB said this was the second raid they had carried out at the BTC venues, following an earlier raid on the premises in 2019. During this raid, the police found Rs 96 lakh cash and arrested 40 bookies. This led to the police uncovering a large tax evasion scam.
