The Russian high-stakes poker player Stefan “stefan11222” Burakov has levelled some serious accusations against his former girlfriend, Alena Mironenko, claiming that she stole $3 million in cryptocurrency from him.
Poker player Stefan Burakov claims ex-girlfriend stole $3 million in cryptocurrency.
Burakov made the claim on the Russian poker forum GypsyTeam, and said that the incident happened two years ago when Mironenko allegedly accessed his crypto wallet’s seed phrase via an iPad.
Burakov Admits to Security Oversight
Burakov said that the seed phrase, which is part of most crypto wallets’ security measures, had been stored on a device he gave to Mironenko. Typically, a seed phrase consists of a series of random words generated by a wallet’s software, which must be kept highly secure. Burakov admitted that this security oversight allowed Mironenko to gain unauthorized access to his digital funds.
In his forum posts, Burakov took ownership of the mistake, acknowledging that he had handed over the iPad containing the seed phrase to Mironenko. He expressed regret but also noted that the experience had taught him important lessons. Burakov mentioned contemplating more extreme actions to recover the stolen cryptocurrency but, in the end, decided not to pursue it.
The day after Burakov made his accusation, Mironenko responded, strongly denying any involvement in the theft. She highlighted that multiple people had access to the devices containing the seed phrase image and claimed to have warned Burakov about the security risk. Additionally, Mironenko suggested that another individual named by Burakov, Maxim Shatilov, was also not involved.
