PGA Golf Hecklers Suspected of Influencing Betting Outcomes
The PGA Tour has reported incidents of fans heckling golfers, raising suspicions that they may be attempting to influence betting outcomes. Although there hasn’t been a rise in such incidents, the PGA Tour is closely monitoring the situation.
For example, a fan was removed from the BMW Championship for yelling at Max Homa, and he was later found to have bet $3 on Homa missing a putt.
Concerns over Integrity of the Game
These incidents have prompted the PGA Tour to focus on maintaining the integrity of the game. Laura Neal, VP of brand communications, stated that while heckling wasn’t widespread, the PGA Tour’s security was present to ensure fair play.
Betting on golf has had mixed effects. While it seems to have increased viewership, with major American sportsbooks providing exclusive coverage, it has also attracted some unpleasant characters. However, the PGA Tour has no evidence of an increase in hecklers.

Max Homa shared that fans are generally respectful during swings, and any interruptions are usually unintentional. Yet, intentional disturbances are frustrating. Other golfers, like Jon Rahm, have been more vocal about their displeasure with hecklers, irrespective of their numbers.
Dealing with Betting and Gambling
The recent heckling is not an isolated incident. Rahm has complained that heckling is a persistent issue in every round, and it seems he is far more concerned about it than the PGA Tour and Homa.
The challenge for the PGA Tour is preventing those who have gambled on the game from influencing it. Efforts are being made in this direction, with the organization collaborating with US Integrity to strengthen integrity across the sport.
