PAS Wants to Close Malaysia’s Casino If It Wins in Pahang
In Malaysia, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) has announced plans to shut down the Genting Casino in the country, if the political party gains election victory in the future in the state of Pahang.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:This is due to Muslim religious beliefs where gambling is strictly prohibited. PAS has made significant gains in the state elections in Malaysia since 2022 due to an increase in the Muslim population in the country, and now has control of four of the thirteen states in the region. Phanang is the location of the country’s only casino, the Genting Casino, and feels if it is elected in this state it has the political mandate to lobby for the closure of the land-based gaming venue.
Supporters of the Genting Casino are quick to point out that the gambling industry provides thousands of jobs and contributes an estimated $1.5 billion to government revenues each year, according to independent research figures generated prior to the pandemic.

Gambling in the country is controlled and regulated by the Federal Government and not by the individual states. However, if the number of states that take anti-gambling stance grows the Federal government will have no alternative but to look at gaming legislation in the region.
The rise of the PAS party in the country has already had an effect on the current government and it recently blocked plans for the country's second land-based casino, the Forest City Casino.
Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it. But it must be in accordance with the laws and Constitution. In Genting Highlands, the power might not be entirely ours. It could require a federal government decision, so we might not be able to shut it down.
