Paddy Power Closes 21 Betting Shops in Ireland
Paddy Power, the subsidiary of the Flutter UK Group, has announced it will close some of its retail betting shops due to market conditions.
Paddy Power is an Irish-based bookmaker with more than 250 retail shops in Ireland and Great Britain. It has earmarked 21 betting shops that are to be closed following a periodic review of the entire suite of retail betting shop outlets in the group.
The gaming operator has listed the areas where the closures will happen, with nine betting shops closing in the capital, Dublin, and others in the counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, and Wexford.
After the review of its complete gaming operation, the group decided to close the most underperforming bookmaker outlets in the Republic of Ireland.

Customers Slow to Return after Covid
During COVID, bookmakers in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom closed due to government restrictions. However, restrictions in the Republic lasted longer than in other regions, and this has had the knock-on effect of meaning customers have been slower to return to levels similar to the pre-pandemic customer base.

Flutter Expect Minimal Job Losses
In the statement, Flutter says the closures will directly affect 78 staff at the betting shops and says most of the employees will be offered positions similar to their current jobs.
However, the Flutter group has acknowledged that the retail betting shop closures will mean redundancy for a small number of its staff.
