Members of North Carolina’s state lottery commission have unanimously agreed to select March 11 as the start date for online sports betting on mobiles and desktops in the state.

Last year, the state lottery commission was designated by the General Assembly to oversee the implementation of sports betting policies and licensing of operators in North Carolina. Now, the state regulators have announced that North Carolina’s mobile sports betting market will go live at noon on March 11, right in time for the ACC Tournament scheduled to begin the next day, March 12.

While bettors in the state will be able to wager on professional, college, or Olympic-style sports when the market launches, the chosen opening date underscores the significance of college basketball in North Carolina. The state is currently home to four ACC schools.

Application Requirements

According to the commission, it has received applications from nine operators seeking to offer sports betting services in the state. These applicants must obtain a certificate of compliance before being allowed to provide online betting services. The applications are currently being assessed in an ongoing review process.

As part of their applications, interested gambling operators are mandated to partner with an in-state professional team or specific pro golf or automobile racing venues or governing bodies to secure a license. While it isn’t necessary for the operators to disclose the agreements, some applicants have announced their partnerships in the state. This includes bet365 which has joined forces with NBA's Charlotte Hornets.

In June 2023, Gov. Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347 into law, which expanded the legal sports gambling options in North Carolina. The legislation stipulated that sports gambling must commence by June 15 2024, in the state. Additionally, the legislation directed the North Carolina Lottery Commission to grant up to 12 interactive sports wagering licenses to entities that would take mobile and online sports bets from customers who register on their platforms.

Registrations to Begin on First of March

Starting from March 1, Individuals who are interested in betting in North Carolina will be able to create new accounts and deposit money with licensed operators with certificates from the commission.

The gap between the sign-up date and the actual market launch date is to give people ample time to compare offerings from different operators and familiarize themselves with online interfaces and responsible gambling features.

Bets on sporting events have been made for as long as those events have taken place, but this time they will be legal, they will be done securely and fairly, and they will be made under rules designed to encourage responsible gaming.

When its market goes live on March 11, North Carolina will be the 30th state in the US to offer mobile sports betting.

It is important to note that sports betting is already legal in the state. However, it was only restricted to in-person wagering at three casinos operated by either the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians or the Catawba Indian Nation. Both tribes have submitted applications to offer online sports wagering in the state.
