North Carolina Announce Potential Ban of College Prop Bets
More than a year after online sports betting launched in North Carolina, the state’s lawmakers are attempting to ban college proposition bets.

A new legislative push has begun that aims to ban prop bets on college games due to growing concerns about their potential harm to student-athletes and increasing reports of threats from upset gamblers.
House Bill 828 Targets College and Amateur Prop Wagers
This week, House Bill 828 (HB 828) was introduced by several state legislators to ban proposition bets on college and amateur sports, coming not long after a federal bill proposing to ban college prop bets. HB 828 cleared its first reading in the House on Wednesday, just a day after it was filed, and has since been referred to the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee.
The bill is sponsored by Representatives Marcia Morey, Neal Jackson, Pricey Harrison, and Mitchell S. Setzer, and has attracted bipartisan support. Additional backers include lawmakers from both parties, such as Reps. Eric Ager, Mary Belk, Brian Biggs, Deb Butler, Tim Longest, Joseph Pike, and Julie von Haefen.
Under HB 828, prop bets related to college and amateur sports would be outlawed. The bill defines a proposition wager as a bet “on an individual action, statistic, occurrence, or nonoccurrence to be determined during a sporting event” and it includes outcomes that do not directly influence the final score of the game.

Concerns Over Player Safety and Integrity
Prop bets allow gamblers to wager on specific moments within a game, such as penalties, player stats, or injuries, rather than the overall result. While this type of bet is very popular, critics argue it compromises the integrity of sports and increases the risk to student-athletes.
There have been multiple reports of athletes receiving threats via social media from bettors upset over losing bets, which has caused mounting concern among policymakers and sports organizations. HB 828 is seen as a direct response to these issues and follows a previous, unsuccessful attempt to implement similar restrictions last year.
However, with its broad political support and growing public awareness, this new proposal may stand a better chance of becoming law.
