This comes as the government plans to regulate online casinos in the region by 2026. This consultation was outlined earlier by authorities as part of the changes in the gambling framework in New Zealand and gives industry stakeholders and members of the public to contribute to the gaming regulations in the jurisdiction.

The consultation process is open until October this year. The authorities in New Zealand have expressed they wish to grow the regulated gambling markets in the country while trying to minimize gambling-related harm to vulnerable people in the community.

While many New Zealanders enjoy gambling as a pastime without issue, the statistics are clear that harm from gambling can have a significant impact, therefore it is important that we put in place initiatives and interventions that prevent and minimize harm from gambling, I would encourage you to have your say on this consultation document by 6 October 2024 to help inform its development.

New Zealand Government Outlines Proposed Support

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) will regulate the new market the government wants to introduce in 2026, with licensed operators set to be able to offer online casino games.

The government has already introduced a range of initiatives designed to address mental health issues and gambling addiction and believes regulation of gaming markets will also be beneficial to reducing gambling-related harm in the community.

The Government’s mental health and addiction priorities are clearly reflected in the draft strategy to ensure a comprehensive gambling harm support system is in place. These priorities include increasing access to gambling harm support, growing the gambling harm workforce, strengthening the focus on the prevention of and early intervention in gambling harm and improving the effectiveness of gambling harm support. This includes the roll-out of services to support those at risk of gambling harm, research to understand the changing gambling landscape and work to regulate online casinos.
