Nevada Gaming Commission Approves BetMGM Takeover of MGM Sportsbooks
The Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) has granted approval for BetMGM, the joint venture between MGM Resorts International and European-based Entain, to oversee sportsbook operations at MGM properties in Las Vegas. The decision, made on Thursday, authorizes BetMGM to assume control of nine MGM sportsbook locations, including Mandalay Bay, from where it will manage all other MGM sportsbooks in the city.

Previously, BetMGM was licensed as a manufacturer and sports information distributor, later securing a registration as an information-technology service provider. This designation initially allowed the company to have significant involvement in MGM's race and sports operations.

To clarify its position, BetMGM sought additional licensing as a key employee, ensuring direct participation in sportsbook operations. This license was granted in December, paving the way for full regulatory approval from the commission.
With the necessary authorization in place, BetMGM will assume responsibility for all sportsbook operations at MGM's Las Vegas locations. The transition process is expected to take several months due to the complexities involved in shifting management structures and integrating new systems. The transition is set to occur between the beginning of the MLB season and the start of the football season.
The transition will impact sportsbook employees at these properties. Currently, MGM employs 70 full-time and 30 part-time sportsbook staff, all of whom will transfer to BetMGM. Their compensation is expected to remain unchanged, with the only difference being that their paychecks will be issued by BetMGM instead of MGM Resorts. To ensure a seamless transition for both employees and customers, BetMGM will work closely with MGM to align operational processes.

MGM Not Giving Up All Complete Control
In addition to employee restructuring, the integration of player rewards and customer experiences will be a focal point of the transition. BetMGM will oversee sportsbook and racebook operations, while MGM will continue to handle casino-related activities.
The companies will collaborate on how rewards and complimentary benefits are distributed across the two entities to maintain consistency for patrons. A key aspect of this integration will be synchronizing digital systems to provide a streamlined and efficient user experience.
BetMGM employs 115 people in Nevada. Despite the perception that BetMGM operates primarily on a national or international level, a significant portion of its key personnel are based in Nevada. One of its executives is expected to be reviewed for licensing as a key executive by the commission in the coming months.
Surveillance and security operations will remain under MGM's jurisdiction through a contractual agreement. MGM's existing surveillance infrastructure, including cameras and monitoring systems, will continue to be utilized to ensure compliance and operational security.
