NatCen Announce Plans to Scrutinize the UK Gambling Act Review
The UK’s National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) has announced that the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) together with the Gambling Commission (UKGC) has commissioned it to produce a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan for the Gambling Act Review.
As part of the project, NatCen will be looking into recently introduced gambling reforms to see how effective they have been in addressing gambling harm and various other issues. Furthermore, NatCen has been asked to evaluate whether a balance has been found between individual freedoms and the prevention of gambling harm.
Evaluation of Gambling Harm and the Wider Industry
NatCen will also be looking into whether British gamblers are afforded equal protection when gambling online and land-based casinos. Furthermore, the institution has been asked to produce a Theory of Change (ToC) for the Gambling Act Review.
The ToC will be produced with the DCMS and the UKGC. It will incorporate a document analysis to make sure that it considers the latest developments in the gambling industry. Furthermore, NatCen will create a comprehensive evaluation plan that examines the different ways in which the Gambling Act Review can be assessed.
Balancing Individual Freedoms and Societal Harm
NatCen’s director of health policy, Dr. Sokratis Dinos, said that he and his team are excited about the opportunity to formulate the monitoring and evaluation plan for the Gambling Act Review.
This evaluation will consider the extent to which measures have effectively prevented gambling-related harm to vulnerable groups and wider communities, whilst enabling the balance of consumer freedom and informed choice, and explore the wider impact on gambling behaviors and the market.
