Mirage, Tropicana Casinos Sign New Deal With Culinary Union Workers
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The Culinary Union 226 announced on Wednesday that it had reached tentative contract agreements with two of its largest employers in Las Vegas, The Mirage and the Tropicana casinos. These agreements cover over 2,000 workers at the two resorts, providing a significant boost to the union's ongoing negotiations with casino operators in Nevada.
Avoiding a Strike
The Mirage, which is currently in the process of being transformed into a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, will see its workforce of around 1,700 workers covered by the new agreement. The Tropicana, with its 300-member workforce, will also benefit from a new contract.

The casino's location on the Las Vegas Strip is earmarked for a new $1.5-billion stadium for MLB's relocating Oakland Athletics. Developers have indicated that the 1,500-room hotel casino needs to be closed and demolished to make way for the 33,000-seat stadium, which is slated to begin construction by April 2025.
Bally's Corp, the property's operator, has acknowledged that it plans on demolishing the entire property. However, it has committed to building a new venue in its place after the stadium work is done.
A union spokeswoman assured that the contract includes provisions for job protection, worker recalls, placement in other jobs, healthcare, seniority and other safeguards to ensure the well-being of the Tropicana's workforce through the transition. These protections are standard in the union's contracts and are intended to provide stability and support for its members.
Other Negotiations Continue
The tentative agreements follow the recent ratification of a contract between the Culinary Union and the three major Las Vegas casino operators – MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts. That agreement, which covers over 40,000 workers, was a resounding success for the union, securing significant wage increases and enhancements to benefits.
The Culinary Union is now continuing negotiations with 23 other casino operators in Nevada, including 10 on the Las Vegas Strip, 11 downtown, and two in northern Nevada. The union said in its statement that it is committed to reaching fair and equitable agreements with all of its employers, ensuring that workers across the state receive the compensation and benefits they deserve.
These tentative agreements represent a significant step forward in the Culinary Union's ongoing efforts to secure fair and equitable contracts for its members. The union is committed to working collaboratively with employers to reach mutually beneficial agreements that reflect the hard work and dedication of its workforce.
