In a brazen casino heist to close out 2023, a group of seven individuals orchestrated a daring robbery at the MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino in Maryland. The incident, which took place on December 29, sparked a police investigation and resulted in the arrest of two suspects.

Heist Unfolds at MGM National Harbor

According to authorities, the robbery commenced at approximately 12:15 AM, when the group of individuals, clad in dark clothing and masks, stormed the casino floor and targeted a gaming table. Amidst the chaos, they managed to scoop up a significant stack of chips worth an undisclosed amount.

The robbery did not go unnoticed, and casino security personnel swiftly responded, engaging in a tense standoff with the perpetrators. The altercation resulted in minor injuries to security staff, but it ultimately failed to deter the robbers, who made a swift escape from the scene.

Despite the suspects' getaway, it didn't take long for the theft to begin to fall apart. Two individuals involved in the heist were apprehended shortly after the incident, while the remaining five remain at large. The police have launched a comprehensive investigation, utilizing surveillance footage and other investigative techniques to identify and apprehend the fugitives.

This robbery is the latest in a series of challenges faced by MGM Resorts International over the past few months. In addition to the cyberattack that disrupted operations at several of its properties, the company is now dealing with the fallout from a shooting incident at its MGM Signature Towers in Las Vegas.

Early on New Year's Eve, between 30 and 40 gunshots were fired from a balcony at the off-Strip property, reportedly injuring no one. A person of interest was apprehended, but the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Casino Thefts Bring 2023 to a Close

The Maryland casino theft wasn't the only one that brought 2023 to a close. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a Rivers Casino manager is facing charges of stealing $20,000 from the cashiers cage.

Yancy Yeater, who worked as a player services manager at the casino, is alleged to have pilfered the funds from the casino's vault on multiple occasions over the past few months. Surveillance footage captured Yeater's actions, prompting the casino's security staff to alert the authorities.

The Maryland and Pennsylvania casino thefts join several others that took place in 2023. Over $3 million was allegedly stolen from various gaming properties across the US throughout the year. This is in addition to the millions that were stolen from casinos in Singapore, Europe and Latin America.
