According to the MCG, Fanatics approved a $2 parlay bet in December 2023, which included a leg on a non-tournament Massachusetts college basketball game. This was a breach of Massachusetts sports betting rules, which prohibit bets on in-state college teams in non-tournament games.
Zachary Mercer, Enforcement Counsel for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), informed commissioners that the error was detected and rectified before the game began, with the offending leg of the parlay removed.
Director of the MGC's Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB) Caitlin Monahan also explained that in such cases, the bet remains active with adjusted odds reflecting the removal of the selection. The IEB drew the attention of the MGC to the error on February 1, 2024, and recommended a $15,000 fine after conducting a thorough investigation.
Mercer stated that Fanatics was cooperative throughout the process as it agreed to the mistake and accepted the penalty.

Similar Fine for Fanatics
The latest fine marks the second time Fanatics has been penalized by the MGC in two months. In June, the operator received a $10,000 fine for accepting a $50 futures bet on the Fenway Bowl game between Boston College and Southern Methodist University.
Fanatics attributed the mistake to a new employee who accidentally enabled the option to bet on the college game. However, the company promptly detected the error, self-reported the incident to the MGC, and refunded the wager the next day, well before the game's scheduled date.
