Maryland Lottery Launches Its Holiday Gift Responsibly Message
The Maryland Lottery, the state gaming operator, has partnered with other lottery operators in the United States (US) to launch its Gift Responsibly Campaign, which promotes responsible gaming through the holiday period.

Maryland Lottery has identified that one of the state's holiday customs is for players to gift lottery tickets to children. The operator has launched this responsible gambling initiative to try to dissuade individuals from this practice.
The National Council on Problem Gambling also partnered with this campaign and tried to highlight the risks associated with gifting lottery tickets to underage children. Research from the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling has shown that early exposure to gambling may lead to individuals being susceptible to gambling-related harms in later life.

Legislation in Maryland states lottery tickets cannot be sold to children under eighteen and the lottery operator has introduced some measures to remind adults of this. One of the efforts is to include video messaging on self-service vending machines advising customers that players must be over eighteen. Stores that sell lottery tickets are required to prominently display 18+ signage to show that lottery tickets are for adults only.
Additionally, Maryland Lottery says it is keen to demonstrate its commitment to creating a safe gambling environment for customers in the state and is in the process of applying for the Responsible Gambling Verification Program, which is the highest certification the organization achieves.
