We must protect our youth from the serious social and psychological risks that gambling poses. That is why the new regulations are clear; anyone found entertaining children under the age of 18 to participate in gambling activities will face a fine of (Kwacha) K20 million ($11,500).

Stakeholders Collaborate to Prevent Underage Gambling

MAGLA is keen to point out that gambling should be a recreational activity and has raised concerns over the level of gambling addiction in the country. The regulator sees this move as a way to prevent vulnerable minors from being at risk from gambling-related harm.

This new regulation requires all stakeholders in the gaming industry to collaborate to protect under 18 children from gambling harms. Betway is one the tier 1 gaming operators in the country and senior leadership at the bookmakers have given their full support to the new regulations. Betway state gaming operators in the country will set up procedures and provide staff training to achieve compliance with the new legislation.

We need awareness that gaming is leisure. We’ve noticed that especially among the youth, due to unemployment and lack of activities, they spend too much time gambling. Everyone should know there are limits to how much one can gamble.
