Macau’s Judiciary Police report that surveillance footage from an unnamed casino in the ZAPE District (Zona Aterro do Porto Exterior) purportedly shows a female supervisor taking chips from a roulette table on four occasions.

Authorities claim the suspect, a 56-year-old local woman, used double-sided tape to discreetly steal the chips. Police believe she took three HK$100K chips on June 1, 3, and July 21. Over the past weekend, casino security allegedly observed her taking a fourth HK$100K chip. The total value of the stolen chips amounts to HK$400K, approximately US$51,400.

Macau’s Crackdown on Crime

The Judiciary Police state that the woman was caught in the act over the weekend with a HK$100K gaming chip and a sticky substance on her hand. She was arrested and charged with aggravated theft.

This summer, Macau’s law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to combat illegal activities in and around casinos. Known as “Thunderbolt 2024,” the operation has increased police presence across the SAR, focusing particularly on the Cotai and ZAPE districts, and it has led to several criminal arrests.

Late last week, police detained a woman accused of stealing HK$320K (US$41K) from a gambler. On August 1, casino surveillance captured a woman sitting next to a man playing a table game with a large pile of chips contained in what the Judiciary Police called a “crossbody bag”.

After a brief chat lasting about three minutes, the woman walked away. The man soon realized his bag was missing HK$320K worth of chips.

After notifying casino security, police reviewed surveillance footage and spotted the woman at another ZAPE District casino exchanging the chips for cash. She was later arrested, but only HK$82K was recovered. She faces charges of aggravated theft.

Illegal Gambling Operations Targeted

The Thunderbolt 2024 initiative also targets illegal gambling operations outside land-based casinos. Law enforcement is focused on eradicating illegal gambling hubs and networks, many of which center on sports betting.

Last month, Judiciary Police, in collaboration with police in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, arrested 93 individuals suspected of involvement in an illegal sports betting ring. The operation allegedly handled at least MOP1.08 billion (US$134 million) in illegal bets.
