LIV Golf Betting Prohibited in Massachusetts
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has unanimously voted to include LIV golf in its list of prohibited sports to bet on in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts commissioners decided to vote on prohibiting LIV golf after DraftKings submitted a request to offer betting on the event in the state.
LIV betting is currently allowed in some states like Arizona, Connecticut, Wyoming, Colorado, Oregon, and Illinois.
However, Massachusetts commissioners, unconvinced about the game's integrity due to the controversy surrounding it and its financial sponsors, have decided to exclude LIV golf events from the state's wagering catalog.
For a lot of the reasons that are in the press about the financial backing of the LIV league, to me, I'd feel uncomfortable putting this in our catalog.
However, the MGC is not ruling out the possibility of accepting the league in the future. Although they have voted to leave LIV out of the catalog for now, their decision was mainly based on the current situation of the league.
Currently, LIV is attempting to merge with the PGA; if approved, operators could bring the sport to the commission again to vote on.
LIV Golf League Situation
The LIV Golf League was initially referred to as the LIV Golf International Series when it was inaugurated last June. The first event started on 9 June 2022 at the Centurion Club near St Albans in Hertfordshire, London.
Several states have been skeptical about approving the event because it has no specific governing body or integrity policy until recently.
In January 2023, the Saudi Arabia-funded circuit inked a TV deal with CW network, a significant milestone in its drive to establish its presence in the world of golf.
Ban on Other Sports
Recently, Massachusetts commissioners voted to exclude several sports from their wagering catalog. In April, due to the request of the race organizers, operators were banned from offering bets on the Boston Marathon.
In May 2023, the commissioners also ruled out betting on mini golf, slap fighting, and pro skateboarding.
The commission also has regulations in place limiting wagering on sports in Russia. Betting on leagues organized in Russia and Belarus, like the Russian Premier League, is currently prohibited in the Old Colony State.
