As a social lottery, VriendenLoterij channels its resources towards supporting charitable causes, community clubs, and organizations that prioritize health and wellbeing initiatives.

On the platform, players can select a charity to support to receive at least 40% of their proceeds if they win. If no charity is specified, the funds will be distributed among the 43 charities supported by VriendenLoterij.

To encourage other players and attract new members, VriendenLoteri regularly shares testimonials from lottery winners, revealing the positive effects of winning on their lives.

However, the recent ad under scrutiny featured a winner explaining how their prize money was used to pay for medical bills. This has led to worries about the ad’s potential impact on vulnerable individuals.

The KSA reiterated that lottery stories must avoid mentioning how winnings solved homelessness, medical issues, funeral costs, or debt, as this could tempt vulnerable individuals to spend excessively on lottery tickets in hopes of resolving their own financial struggles.

The advertisement appeared in a major Dutch newspaper but was promptly removed by VriendenLoterij after the KSA intervened.

This development underscores KSA’s intensified efforts to monitor and regulate unconventional advertising tactics. It also aligns with its Supervisory Agenda 2025, which prioritizes stricter enforcement of advertising regulations.

Last month, the regulator cracked down on seven gaming operators for violating advertising rules, including unauthorized public displays of branded vehicles and sports celebrity tie-ins.

Explicit Advert Leads to Stake’s Exit

Several miles across the North Sea, specifically in the United Kingdom, another company found itself in hot water over its latest ad promotion.

Cryptocurrency casino and Everton sponsor Stake faced regulatory backlash over its promotional video on X, which featured adult star Bonnie Blue bragging about trying to have sex with “barely legal” 18-year-old freshmen at Nottingham Trent University.

Amidst the controversy, Stake decided to exit the UK gambling market.
