Kolkata Police Cracks Down on World Cup Cricket Betting Racket
In a recent crackdown on illegal gambling activities surrounding the ongoing World Cup matches, Kolkata police arrested three individuals suspected to be part of a cricket betting and gambling racket. The arrests came after specific information led the authorities to take action against those involved in this illicit operation.
The two suspects apprehended from a hotel near Shakespeare Sarani were identified as Sameer Khan, hailing from Gwalior, and Manish (surname not disclosed by the police), who came from Delhi. According to the Kolkata police, the two had arrived in Kolkata as part of a betting ring, preparing for the upcoming World Cup match scheduled for Sunday.

As part of the operation, the police also seized the mobile phones belonging to the arrested individuals, presumably containing crucial evidence related to their illegal gambling activities.
Further investigations led to the identification and apprehension of another alleged associate, Ashish Batra, from Delhi. Batra had been staying at a different hotel in central Kolkata and was believed to be part of the same gambling network.
The modus operandi of this group involved moving from one city to another as the World Cup matches were scheduled, taking advantage of the widespread interest in cricket betting. During their stay in Kolkata, they targeted the India-South Africa match, hoping to profit from the cricket frenzy.
The arrested individuals now face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to cheating and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, they have been booked under Sections 3 and 4 of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act 1957, which specifically addresses gambling-related offenses.
Following their arrest, the three suspects appeared in a city court, where they were remanded in police custody until November 6. This move allows the authorities to conduct further investigations into the cricket betting and gambling racket, including identifying any other potential associates or networks involved in these illegal activities.
