Ipsos Study Shows GAMSTOP Boosts Safety and Control
An independent review by Ipsos has shown that most users of GAMSTOP, the UK’s national gambling self-exclusion service, feel as if they are safer and have better control over their gambling after signing up.
Ipsos study finds GAMSTOP improves player safety.
The survey, which included over 4,650 people, revealed that 78% found GAMSTOP effective in achieving their goals. Additionally, 80% of those surveyed said they would recommend the service to others.
Majority of People Satisfied with GAMSTOP
The report reveals that 73% of users are satisfied with GAMSTOP’s service and this increases to 85% among those who no longer gamble. Furthermore, 72% of respondents said they felt more secure from gambling-related risks after registering, and three-quarters reported feeling more in control of their gambling habits.
Since GAMSTOP’s launch in 2018, over 500,000 people have enrolled to block their access to UK-licensed online gambling sites. The primary reasons for registration were stopping gambling entirely (55%), regaining control of their lives (55%), and reducing gambling expenses (51%).
Despite the positive feedback, the evaluation identified some challenges. While GAMSTOP effectively blocks access to licensed operators, users are aware that it does not completely eliminate the urge to gamble.
The report suggests that providing longer or lifetime exclusion periods could offer greater assurance, particularly for those who want to quit gambling permanently. Another issue raised by users is the availability of unlicensed gambling sites. Some respondents admitted to using illegal platforms that are not part of the GAMSTOP system.

The report recommends that the Government, the UK Gambling Commission, and other stakeholders take action to curb the promotion of these illegal platforms and enforce stricter regulations.
We regularly assess the service through thorough independent research, and it is reassuring to know that the majority of our users feel GAMSTOP has helped them significantly reduce gambling-related harm.
Earlier this month, GAMSTOP extended its outreach efforts by partnering with The New Saints FC for Self-Exclusion Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about responsible gambling.
