Indonesia Uses AI to Intensify Campaign Against Online Gambling
The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is increasing its efforts to identify and block online gambling content through advanced cyber patrols with the aim of ending online gambling practices that have grown increasingly common.

During the “Combating Online Gambling and New Crimes in the Era of Digital Economy 5.0” event in Jakarta on November 19, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid spoke of the ministry’s ongoing measures. The event provided a platform for the discussion of strategies to combat digital crimes, including online gambling.
AI Used to Detect and Remove Gambling Content
The ministry has adopted cutting-edge tools, such as artificial intelligence, to detect and remove gambling-related content. Hafid revealed that since 2017, the government has blocked access to 5.1 million gambling-related items, with 3.5 million pieces of content removed in 2024 alone.
In addition to content removal, the ministry is focusing on improving digital literacy among Indonesians. Training programs held in 2024 have reached 165,000 participants across 27 provinces, equipping them with the knowledge to navigate digital spaces safely and responsibly.
Hafid has urged social media companies to actively participate in anti-online gambling campaigns, emphasizing the shared responsibility of platforms operating in Indonesia. She said that even if the platforms are foreign, “as long as those accessing them are Indonesians, then their business activities cannot be separated from our narrative as a nation.”

More Collaboration Needed with Financial Service Providers
The minister also stressed the importance of collaboration with digital financial service providers. She noted that financial transactions linked to gambling must be monitored to ensure the success of blocking efforts.
This is where strong cooperation is needed. We need to intensify and accelerate efforts to block (online gambling content) on sites. However, at the same time, if the financial transactions are not monitored, the efforts will not generate results.
To strengthen these initiatives, the Indonesian government established the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force earlier this year. The task force was formalized with the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 21 of 2024 on June 14, 2024, as a clear demonstration the government’s commitment to eliminate online gambling and create a safer digital environment for its citizens.
