Mayor Concerned about Safety

The event, held at the Harvey Park District’s Gloria Taylor Center, aimed to fill approximately 1,000 job openings for the new casino. However, despite hundreds of job seekers arriving early in the morning, the job fair was abruptly canceled, disappointing nearly 300 individuals looking for employment opportunities at Wind Creek Chicago Southland. It was reported that Harvey Mayor Christopher Clark contacted Brent Pinkston, the chief operating officer for Wind Creek Hospitality, less than 20 minutes before the fair’s scheduled to start at 10 am and requested that the event be canceled due to concerns over crowd control.

With the gaming, hospitality, and entertainment venue intending to start hiring employees in August, the job fair was to be a major event. Unfortunately, despite the numerous pre-registered participants, the event was canceled, leaving both the casino and job seekers frustrated.

Kisha McCaskill, executive director of the Harvey Park District, said that more than 100 people had arrived by 10 AM.

These are people who took time off of their jobs, people who took time away from their children, these are people who are struggling. As of the time that it was shut down, we already had 286 people signed in.

Wind Creek Took Decision to Cancel

Harvey spokesperson Glenn Harston claimed that the decision to cancel was made by Wind Creek, not Mayor Clark. In an email, Harston explained that Mayor Clark contacted a Wind Creek representative, expressing concerns about the large expected crowd and whether the venue could safely accommodate everyone. Additionally, Clark was worried about there only being a small law enforcement and fire department presence to ensure the event’s safety.

According to Harston, after the mayor raised these concerns, Wind Creek decided to cancel the job fair. “The decision to cancel the job fair was made by Wind Creek, not by the Mayor or the City,” the spokesperson wrote.
