Collaboration Signifies a Milestone for the Tejon Indian Tribe
The start of the casino on tribal land is a significant date for the Tejon Indian Tribe, which is a community of around 1,300 and who are located in Bakersfield in the state. The tribe was federally recognized by the government in 2012, which the Tejon people had been fighting for since 1851.
Leaders of the tribe say this ceremony is a major step in the process of self-determination of the Tejon Indian community and hope the revenues generated by the casino and entertainment facilities will lead to improved economic fortunes, education, healthcare, and housing development.
This is an exciting day for the state of California, Kern County and the Tejon Indian Tribe, This groundbreaking is a symbolic ceremony for the Tribe, which was landless for more than 150 years and has been a priority for us since we were reaffirmed as a federally recognized Indian tribe. From the start of our relationship with the United States government in 1851, our Tribe has fought for a homeland for our people. Today, we are one major step closer to the dream of self-determination through economic development.
