Hana Financial Group Invests 10 Billion Won to Prevent Youth Gambling

Hana Financial Group announced on Sunday, 11 August, its plan to invest 10 billion won ($7.32 million) over the next three years in a campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of illegal gambling among young people.

This initiative is a collaboration between Hana Financial Group and the Korea Center on Gambling Problems, with participation from public institutions such as the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), National Gambling Control Commission, National Police Agency, and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

A Focus on Financial Education

At the project’s launch event in Hongdae, Seoul, FSS Governor Lee Bok-hyun emphasized the importance of financial education in preventing gambling among youth.

The Financial Supervisory Service, in charge of providing financial education for youngsters, has been putting efforts into preventing illegal gambling that disrupts them from forming a proper perspective on money management. I hope the co-project involving the financial circle and public institutions, can be a meaningful step to ensure a sound future for the young people.

Hana Financial Group Chairman Ham Young-joo reiterated the group’s dedication to shielding young people from online gambling addiction through an integrated approach that includes both prevention and treatment.

He explained that the aim is to create a social safety net and offer counseling for elementary, middle, and high school students. Speaking at the event, he said that he hoped it would help to “raise alarm over youth gambling and to bring attention to prevention and treatment. I hope the whole society can be a lamp protecting young people from illegal gambling.”

Support from Esports Players

To further support this initiative, Hana Financial has appointed professional esports player Lee Sang-hyeok, known by his gaming name “Faker”, as the ambassador for its illegal gambling prevention campaign. Lee, a legendary figure in the online gaming world and a brand model for Hana Bank, addressed the issue in a video message, saying, “Gambling is not a game”, and urging young people to avoid exposure to illegal gambling.

As part of this project, Hana Financial and the Korea Center on Gambling Problems plan to create educational content, including musicals, webtoons, and animations, to highlight the risks associated with illegal gambling. They also intend to organize talk concerts and busking performances.

The project will include the training of approximately 1,000 instructors who will specialize in preventing youth gambling, as well as the designation of 90 local schools as exemplary models for gambling prevention efforts.
