Germany GGL Collects 1,500 Tips Against Black Market Gaming
Germany's gaming regulator, GGL, has commended its citizens for their cooperation in the fight against illegal online gambling.
Half of the tips received were about illegal gambling operators, while the other half focused on regulated German operators.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:According to the GGL, it has received over 1,500 tips on illegal online gambling operations in the jurisdiction since January 2023.
Of the total reports, around 50% involved suspected illegal online gambling activities, while the other half pertained to alleged irregularities at legal online gaming operators.
Beyond citizen reports, GGL has also been conducting its own investigations. Established under the Fourth State Treaty on Gambling implemented in July 2021, the GGL took the reins of Germany's gaming sector in January 2023.
In the first year of its regulatory oversight, GGL was able to scrutinize over 1,860 websites and 483 gaming providers for potential illegal activities via its investigations and whistleblower system. The watchdog initiated 113 prohibition proceedings, resulting in 63 providers and advertisers ceasing their illicit activities.
The GGL's scrutiny of legal platforms revealed three key areas of non-compliance, including discrepancies in payout procedures, non-compliant advertising tactics, and breaches of cross-provider deposit limits.

GGL Urges Continued Support
In the announcement made on Tuesday, 24 September, the GGL urged the public to keep the reports coming in. The regulator encouraged individuals to use its whistleblower system to report violations and provide "as much detail and specific information as possible."
It recently released a step-by-step guide to help the German public navigate and use its whistleblower platform effectively.
Milestone in German Legal Gaming
In related news, Schleswig-Holstein has become the first German state to issue iGaming licenses.
Last week, the state announced that it had issued licenses to various operators, including Bluebet, Tipico, Skill on Net, and Austrian casino Cashpoint, to offer online casino games in its jurisdiction.
