Michigan-based gaming operator FireKeepers Casino Hotel has announced it will increase its commitment to a more sustainable environment with an agreement to use renewable energy as the source for 100% of its electricity.

In partnership with Consumers Energy, it is hoped the switch to renewable energy sources by land-based casinos like this one will lead to a saving of power that is equivalent to 273,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide over twenty years.

FireKeepers Casino's Green Energy Partnership

The FireKeepers Casino Hotel is owned and operated by the native tribe, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. The casino boasts a gaming floor of 111,700 square feet, with 70 gaming tables and 2,900 slot machines. There is a sportsbook and poker room, as well as multiple restaurants and refreshment facilities.

It’s up to us as a Nation, we’ve been given the responsibility by the Creator to protect Mother Earth, we as human beings fall short, but all we can really do is do our best and try to learn from our mistakes and correct our actions. This renewable energy project with Consumers Energy is great timing and shows our commitment to making sure that we keep our promise as far as protecting Mother Earth.

Under the terms of the partnership, the FireKeepers Casino has entered into a commitment that will see the venue's consumption of over 30,000 megawatt-hours per year be matched with clean renewable energy.

This commitment is meaningful in many ways, It accelerates our clean energy journey, allowing us to retire our coal facilities within the next two years and run a carbon-neutral power grid by 2040.

First Casino in Michigan to Join Renewable Scheme

The FireKeepers Casino boasts it is the first operator in Michigan's iGaming market to join the Renewable Energy Program offered by Consumers Energy.

It is estimated that the casino will achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the US state and is comparable to saving the amount of waste from 13,500 garbage trucks destined for landfill or taking more than 60,000 motor vehicles off the road.

With today’s announcement, once again, we’ve made another progressive step toward the future. We are the first Michigan tribal casino to execute such an initiative and we’re hoping that this change may be the catalyst that helps trigger similar action (elsewhere).
