FanDuel Sued by Ex-NFL Employee Who Stole Millions
A $250 million lawsuit has been filed against FanDuel by a former Jackson Jaguars financial manager who asserted that the company exploited his gambling addiction.
The lawsuit claimed FanDuel aggressively encouraged Patel to continue betting by marketing enticements.
Amit Patel, presently serving a 6.5-year sentence in South Carolina for stealing stealing $22 million from the team, initiated the lawsuit against the company in a New York court on Tuesday.
Patel alleged that FanDuel neglected its responsible gaming and anti-money laundering obligation by ignoring his NFL team affiliation, which rendered him ineligible to gamble, failing to check the legitimacy of his $20 million in wagers, and disregarding indicators that the funds may have been stolen or illegal.
Lawsuit Alleges Aggressive Marketing Tactics
Additionally, the lawsuit claimed FanDuel provided Amit Patel with more than $1.1 million in gambling credits and aggressively encouraged him to continue betting by marketing enticements and personalized calls from a host reaching up to 100 times daily.
According to the lawsuit, the FanDuel host assigned personally to Patel consistently inquired about his betting activity, especially if he hadn’t placed a wager that day. These communications allegedly started in the early morning and continued late into the night.
The complaint certainly does not claim the addicted gambler is blameless, but the suit does try to apportion responsibility in a way that accounts for FanDuel’s very active involvement in his gambling addiction.

The lawsuit also stated that FanDuel showered Patel with luxurious gifts, including trips to the Super Bowl, access to the Masters golf tournament, auto racing events, and college basketball tournaments.
When asked for comment, FanDuel spokesperson Chris Jones stated that the company has a policy of not commenting on ongoing legal proceedings.
In December, Amit Patel entered a guilty plea to wire fraud charges and other related offenses and agreed to repay the funds he stole from the team.
