EGBA Reports Record Numbers of Europeans Using Gambling Safety Tools
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has published its fourth annual sustainability report.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The report showed that 65% of European customers, totaling an unprecedented 21 million people, utilized safety tools in 2023 and more than half of the people did so voluntarily, representing a 14% rise from the previous year. In 2023, EGBA’s operators sent 67.6 million messages promoting responsible gambling, a 49% increase from the prior year. More than 23 million of these messages were tailored to the customers’ actual gaming behaviors.
The Sustainability Report 2024 details the collaborative efforts of EGBA members to foster sustainable gambling practices and their societal contributions across Europe. It includes data on customer interactions with safer gambling tools, social contributions, employment, diversity, and environmental impact.
In the report, our CEOs also quite rightly flag their concerns about the growing black market in Europe and the risks it poses to players and the progress made in safer gambling. We’re pleased to expand our reporting this year with specific new metrics about the use of safety tools and messages to promote safer play.

67.6 Million Safer Gambling Messages Sent
EGBA members reach record 67.6 million safer gambling messages, of which 23.7 million were personalized. These messages were predominantly delivered through on-screen pop-ups and emails. Additionally, 80% of all employees, equating to over 45,000 individuals, received specific training on safer gambling.
Among customers displaying potentially problematic behaviors, 65% saw improvement or stabilization in their gambling habits following safety messages. Specifically, 45% showed improvement, 10% ceased playing, and 10% stabilized their activities. Furthermore, 32% of these customers voluntarily activated or enhanced safety tools, including self-exclusion from gambling.
The total number of customer accounts rose to 32.5 million, a 4% increase from the previous year. The customer base comprised 72% males and 28% females, with the 26-35 and 36-50 age groups making up 59% of the total.
€151.4 Million Donated to Charity
EGBA members allocated €61.2 million to problem gambling research, education, and treatment services and donated €151.4 million to various charities and community initiatives across Europe.
The workforce totaled 58,633 employees, with a gender distribution of 57% males and 43% females. Total energy consumption was 253.4 GWh, with 71.8% derived from renewable sources, and greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 0.93 million tonnes CO2e.
In May 2024, EGBA announced that European Safer Gambling Week 2024 will be held from November 18-24. This event will feature workshops and discussions on regulation and research, aiming to unite operators, regulators, support organizations, and experts to advance safer gambling practices throughout Europe.
